Common Questions About Plastering in Bournemouth
Plastering costs vary depending on room size, wall condition and the system required. A standard single room skim typically ranges from £300–£600, while a full multi-coat system on masonry walls or a complete house plastering job will be priced accordingly. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after assessing the job in person.
New plaster should be left to dry fully before painting — this typically takes a week but can take up to 4 weeks in cold/damp conditions for a complete plastering job. The plaster should feel completely dry and have turned a consistent pale colour throughout. Painting too early traps moisture and can cause blistering or peeling.
Skimming refers to applying a thin (2–3mm) finish coat of plaster over existing plasterboard or a pre-plastered wall to create a smooth, paint-ready surface. Full plastering involves applying a scratch coat and float coat on masonry or blockwork walls before finishing — it's a more substantial process used where walls have no existing smooth surface.
In many cases we can skim over existing plaster if it's sound and well-adhered. If the existing plaster is blown (hollow when tapped), crumbling or heavily contaminated, we'll recommend hacking it off and starting fresh — attempting to skim over poor plaster will result in the new finish failing too. We assess this during our free site visit.
A standard room skim typically takes one day. Larger rooms, multi-coat work on masonry, or projects involving multiple rooms will take longer — we'll give you a realistic programme when we quote so you can plan around it.
